Examination of pump turbines on test rig acc. to IEC 60193
Between June 2011 and January 2012 pump turbines according to IEC 60193 have been examined and tested on the major test rig of the Institute’s laboratory.
The measurement portfolio consisted of all important characteristics of a pump turbine. The closed 4-quadrant test rig combined with the motor generator, which is operated by a converter, allows for measurements of turbine charts, including shell diagrams, charts for the switch from turbine to pump operation, pump and no-load curves as well as cavitation diagrams for both operational modii.
Pump turbines: hydraulic efficiency
The pump turbine tests have been realised for five different runner types in one fixed pump turbine housing. By means of an integrated electronic measurement system characteristic curves could be registered during turbine operation as depicted in the figure below.
The measured values and the parameters of the pump turbine could be controlled in real time on a monitor. Furthermore, cavitation could be examined in the turbine as well as in the pump operation mode.
As a final step of the project cross-checks have been established between the data measured for the different runner types of the pump turbine and presented in a comprehensive documentation.
